Uninstalling Tails using Tails itself

To uninstall Tails from a USB stick, and use it for something else, you have to format it.

The content of the USB stick is lost in the operation, but an attacker might still be able to tell that Tails was installed on that USB stick using data recovery techniques.

You can generally uninstall a Tails USB stick while running Tails from that same USB stick.

  1. When starting Tails, add the toram boot option in the Boot Loader.

See modifying the boot options using the Boot Loader.

  2. If Tails starts as usual, follow the instructions to uninstall Tails using Linux.

If the system fails to start, the computer might not have enough memory to use the toram boot option. Try with another computer, uninstall using another operating system, or uninstall while running Tails from another USB stick.
